1.Black Mountain In the Future
Alsof Shakespeare met Faulkner jamt:
muziek die mythisch en episch is als een zware opera: donker, dreigend, monumentaal.
Ergens tussen prog, space en stoner,
maar altijd Black Mountain. Wij draaiden deze toch al minstens vijftig keer, en gaan daar zeker nog even mee door.
2.TV on the Radio Dear Science
Prince die met Radiohead een plaat maakt, een vleugje noise en wave maakt het helemaal af. Nee, nee. Bij elke draaibeurt valt er weer iets nieuws te ontdekken, genoeg eigen smoel dus om dik te overtuigen!
3.Bonnie Prince Billy Lie down in the Light
William steekt in een goed vel, en dat is te horen. Toch altijd weer dat gortdroog melancholieke ondertoontje. Prachtfragment: Finally I lay my hands on Mountain Girl, but soon my efforts were condoned by a friend. En de muziek: rijk gearrangeerde pakkende americana (of hoe het dan ook heten mag) waar geen noot te veel in zit.
4.Calexico Carried to Dust
Ze overtreffen zichzelf nogmaals!
sober en meer tex, uitbundig en meer mex, Calexico legt zichzelf geen grenzen op door een kruisbestuiving van allerlei genres, en dat zonder de kunst van het goede liedje te verliezen.
Bij dit album krijg ik visioenen van tochten over het Comanche trail, langs de Rio Grande zo ergens tussen Santa Fé, New Mexico en Leon Springs, Texas. Met een tequila en een pakje Lucky Strike in een cantina
5.Hold Steady Stay Positive
Tja, stadionrock als uitgangspunt, maar dan met vreemde kronkels. Banjo hier, vocodertje daar. En horen wij daar niet twee maten Ramones? Muziek om met vrienden een kratje te legen en airgitaar te spelen. Maar ook met teksten die handelen over maatschappelijke verloedering en persoonlijke onmacht.
Stadionrock ja, maar wel met een twist en brains.
6.Bon Iver For Emma, Forever ago
Vreemde plaat, met een verhaal dat natuurlijk goed verkoopt, dat van die winterse afzondering in een houthakkershut. En wat rest dan nog? Antwoord: een soort psychedelische minimal folk, met plaats voor gevoelens van eenzaamheid, ontreddering en berusting. Raakt de tere zielen onder de luisteraars diep, gaat tegen de Versnelling in. Vreemde prachtplaat.
7.Voicst A Tale of Two Devils
Alsof de Pixies kindjes hebben gekregen met de Posies en er precies pakkende loops en blazers bij hebben gedaan. Powerpop van wereldklasse!!!
8.Black keys Attack Release
Schijnbaar onderkoelde altbluesrock, maar hé, daar horen wij een vleugje soul, en daar dreint een noisy stekelgitaar.
Dat houdt de aandacht vast. Met een lekker groezelige productie als een oud leren jack dat precies past.
9.Ryan Adams Cardinology
Hij fixt het weer: bijna elke plaat is weer anders, deze is een nieuw begin. Want:vooral melancholiek, niet depressief van toon. Was de vorige cd nog overdadig gearrangeerd, deze weet te overtuigen met voornamelijk berustende liedjes met nauwelijks meer dan een standaard rockbezetting. De klaagmuur is geslecht, het uitzicht daardoor des te mooier. Het gaat beter met Ryan, en dat doet goed.
10.REM-Accelerate
De verrassing van het jaar: al lang afgeschreven oude helden maken een prachtplaat met weer veel sterke songs door dito melodieën. En ze spelen ze als jonge honden - jawel - in de tiende versnelling.
opmerking: 2008 was een pracht popjaar, met opvallend veel ruigere gitaarrock en verstilde altfolk. Helaas alweer nauwelijks tot geen dance op albumformaat die kon beklijven, met uitzondering voor Lulu Rouge'(cd Bless You)en The Bug (cd London Zoo).
Het lijkt alsof de cruciale tweede of derde plaat een hele schare britpoppers (Kaiser Chiefs, Razorlight, Pigeon Detectives, Fratellis) de das om heeft gedaan.
Maar ja, misschien vind jij de laatste cd van een van genoemde groepen wel geweldig, en dan is het mooi dat smaken mogen blijven verschillen.Toch? |

optreden, experimenteel, communicatief en een aanstekelige kinderlijke
creativiteit.
5. The NATIONAL - Lowlands, met mijn faforiete nummer " Secret
Meeting" (lekkere depressieve en onzekere uitvoering, geweldig!)
Beste Tentoonstelingen 2008:
1. IT'S NOT ONLY ROCK 'N' ROLL BABY- Palais de BOZAR, Brussel.
Een tentoonstelling met een 20-tal internationale musikanten
die ook kunst maken.
Met: Alan Vega, Coco Rosie. Brian Eno, Laury Anderson, Miss
Kittin, Yoko Ono, Pete Hoherty,Patty Smith, the Residents e.a.
2. You Dig The Tunnel and I'll Hide The Soil - The White Cube, London.
Een tentoonstelling in de kelders rondom Hoxton Square met een
20-tal internationale kunstenaars die zich lieten inspireren door een
verhaal van Edgar Allan Poe.
3. WANDERLUST - Het Fundament, Tilburg.
Een 4 jarige tentoonstelling buiten in een park met een 20-tal
internationale kunstenaars over nieuwe tentensen in de beeldhouwkunst.
4. TANJA RITTERBEX- WELCOME AT THE PRINCESS PARTY.
Een solo tentoonstelling in het voorjaar van 2008 in het
Odapark te Venray..
Totaal ontwapenend, alleen maar verbeelding.
Beste tijdschrift 2008:
1. MISTER MOTLEY- thema tijdschrift over hedendaagse kunst
Herontdekking van het jaar:
1. De WITTSEE in Leuth net over de grens.
Voor een heerlijke wandeling rond dit fantastisch meer met of
zonder Ipod.
2. BRIAN ENO- Taking Tygers By Strategy - original masters 2004 -
recorded London 1974
Een zeer toegankelijk album met melodieuse liedjes, dat zomaar
in 2009 gemaakt zou kunnen zijn.

* Portishead - Third (vanwege dat er maar 10 in een top 10 passen)
* South San Gabiel - Dual Hawks (net erbuiten, omdat Johnson zijn dingen gescheiden moet houden, meen ik)
* Radiohead - in Rainbows (was de release nu in 2007 of 2008?)
* Phosphorescent - Pride (zeker uit 2007 maar rondom de kerstdagen dus te laat voor de toenmalige lijstjes; 4e prachtceedee van Mattew Houck en 'mijn' beste live-optreden dit jaar: Houcks eerste in Nederland - in 't Valkhof, tijdens de 4-daagse nota bene: stortregen & duisternis maar (juist daarom) mijn hoogtepunt van 't jaar (dat verder een goed klotejaar was, ik kan er helaas niks beters van maken). ____________________________________
